District 17 newsletter

September 29, 2009

The District monthly GSR meeting was held on Tuesday, September 29th, 2009 at the District 17 Central Office, located at 373 Woodward Ave. in Kingsford. Apology from Cliff for not getting to all of the old/new business with the last meeting. The meeting opened with a moment of silence & The Serenity Prayer. In attendance were Cliff W., John R., Ken W., David G., Bruce L., James B., Joe L., Aaron H., Robert A., Kevin J., Patrick, Brandon, & Jen J. Last months minutes accepted as read. If you want to receive the monthly GSR district minutes, please send Jen your email address (jljezylo@uplogon.com)

Financial Chair Report: September financial report attached. Accepted as read. Thanks, Bruce. Bruce will be resigning next month (after elections in October) as treasurer, although he will fulfill his duties until January.

Ken suggests that we spend our $$ so we don’t have so much in our account. $300-400 dollars is a prudent reserve. Ken thinks we could get a Grapevine subscription for all the groups in the district. Dave: Looks like most groups buy their own. Cliff: How about corrections? Dennis will check about where to send them.

Corrections Chair Report: Dropped off coffee at correctional center, have 7 on reserve.

Gave half the books from Camp Ottowa to Deb to bring in and I will bring in remainder when Bill A. and I start mid October. Talked to Terry G. about how things are going and his partner missed half the meetings so far.  Has been going since as I told Terry to let me know and I would start early if needed.

Kevin from Pembine could use another person to help with the Florence correctional meeting.  Get in touch with me or him about doing this meeting if interested.  Still looking for volunteers for Men’s Iron Co. meeting and also would be nice to have two more women for the Dickinson Co. meeting.  Doing these meetings is both service and personal growth, talk to anyone doing them and they will agree.

Respectfully submitted; Dennis S. 906-563-9003 Leave message.

Thanks, Dennis. Kevin: All the literature has disappeared … According to Dennis, they’re in the cell blocks. Kevin would like a lock-box, but Dennis said that they don’t want something like that. Robert: The commissary has a lock box … & it’s not being used. Maybe that will work. Cliff reports that Larry T will continue as the Area U.P. Corrections chair. (He is also DCM for district 18) Corrections report accepted as read.

DCM report: First of all, I would like to express my thanks to John R., James B., and Bruce L., for the opportunities I’ve received to make it to assemblies, Conferences, committee meetings, several UP Intergroups, to local AA meetings, and the Randville picnic in 2009. Without their driving skills, I’d be missing out on the primary purpose behind being the DCM of District 17 for Area 74.

This past month attended the Fall Conference in Marshfield, WI where I witnessed the election process on the Area level. A new delegate (Steve H. ), alternate delegate (Marty L. ), new finance officer (Jeff Q.), secretary/registrar (Mike M.), and all (archive, finance, CPC, PI, literature, treatment, corrections [MI/WI], and Now & Then committee chair people were voted in for a two year term to start January 2010. As DCM representing District 17, I was placed on the Now & Then monthly newsletter committee (Steve S. As DCM 17 was under archives committee).

After the Saturday morning part the Area business of elections, on agenda was the Ad hoc committee guidelines proposals for Area Assemblies. What the committee proposes are: 1) continue 2 assemblies, 2 Conferences per year 2) dispense the Conferences and have four one-day assemblies 3) dispense the Conferences and have two multi-days assemblies (weekend in April & in October). This all is a result of $$ and what is good for AA. What has happened in other areas throughout the structure of AA, the Conferences are no longer to be. Amazingly, all States have what you call State Conferences of AA, except the State of Wisconsin. There are also Regional Conferences and of course the week long annual Conference held in New York. And then every five years is the International Conference of AA (2010 in Texas). I expressed my opinion on keeping the format as status quo, 2 assemblies and 2 Conferences each year and getting the business completed in the allotted time.                                                                                                                                                                                 Living my life 1-day at a time,                                              Page 2
